The Lighter Side of Early Intervention by Marita

This post originally appeared at Stuff With Thing.

I found this in my word document archives, dated 4th Sept 2007 and had a good giggle on re-reading it. Amazingly it seems never to have seen the light of day on my blog. So here you are:

The official paper work says:

Your pediatrician will be the most constant outside presence in your childs trip through early intervention.

Mental note to self – make sure to get a young paed who will not die before my child turns 18.

The official paper work says:

Plan to arrive at meetings early to get to know others attending meeting and get a good seat (plus have time to make yourself a coffee)

Thus according to the laws of

A)    God laughs at those who make plans

B)    Parents of toddlers

C)    Parents of children with developmental delays

D)    Murphy

You should only be about 15 -20 minutes late.  If you plan to arrive dead on time you will inevitably arrive 30-40 minutes late.

Make sure you put at the top of your priority list intervention centres in close proximity to the might God coffee.  If you worship at the altar of coffee at least 3 times a day between the hours of 9am and 12md it will provide you with the much needed elixir of energy to continue going.

The official paper work says:

Take a friend with you to meetings where possible.

Not only will they help you remember all that vital stuff like picking out a paed who is not going to die before your child.  They can also do the really important stuff like make the coffee, fetch biscuits and make more coffee.

Hahaha – the best laid plans and all that – I gave up planning a long time ago and it is the best thing. My son’s (diagnosed with autism at 3)first paediatrician, as we moved, had very little to do with my son and knew very little about autism – when I told him the boy had been diagnosed (at a different facility) he said – that’s a bit young to be diagnosed – couldn’t believe he said that. If anyone was a constant presence in the early years it would be our GP, his speechie and me (of course – haha).

Yep we go with the flow now, try some fairly general planning but that is about it.
